Church Member Spends Six Months Trying to Remember Visitor’s Name Without Asking

GREENWOOD FELLOWSHIP — A routine season of Sunday morning greetings came to an end this week after local church member Steve Collins finally admitted he could no longer remember the name of a man he had been warmly greeting for nearly six months.

According to those familiar with the situation, the two men first met shortly after a worship service last fall. Names were exchanged, hands were shaken, and both promised they would “see each other next Sunday.”

Only one of them remembered the introduction.

From that point forward, Collins developed what witnesses described as “an impressive vocabulary of name-free greetings.”

“Good to see you, brother.”

“Morning, my friend.”

“How’s your week been?”

The strategy worked surprisingly well.

Each Sunday, the conversations grew a little longer. They discovered they both enjoyed fishing, had grandchildren about the same age, and preferred sitting on opposite sides of the sanctuary for reasons neither could fully explain.

Still, the missing name remained unspoken.

Several opportunities to ask quietly came and went. Collins considered introducing the man to someone else in hopes the problem would solve itself, but every attempt was interrupted by another conversation or a fresh pot of coffee arriving in the fellowship hall.

Last Sunday, the mystery finally ended when the church directory committee invited members to verify their contact information after the service.

Collins glanced at the sign-in sheet and smiled.

“Daniel,” he said. “That’s been bothering me for months.”

Daniel laughed.

“I’ve been trying to remember yours.”

The two men stood quietly for a moment before shaking hands again, this time with considerably more confidence than the first.

“I guess we could’ve just asked,” Collins admitted.

“I thought about it every week,” Daniel replied.

At press time, Harold Beam was seen closing his notebook after observing the pair talking comfortably over coffee.

His final note read, “Some friendships grow just fine, even while both people are quietly hoping for a name tag.”
